How do you feel about a spouse getting a life sentence for cheating on his or her spouse?
My boyfriend read an article today on yahoo news about a law that was passed or may get passed stating that if a spouse gets caught cheating, on his or her spouse in the state of Michigan, it could mean a life sentence. He was against it and I feel it’s ok. My reasoning behind my opinion was that if a person feels they may have an affair, he or she should just get divorced to avoid such a thing from happening. How do you feel?

Okay, I live in Michigan and I know there are some back-woods towns in our beautiful state… but this one is just plain whacko. Have your boyfriend check his sources before you go off half-cocked thinking that us hicks would pass such a law.
I’m not sure about the validity of the article your boyfriend read, but common sense would dictate that if they can’t enforce life sentences (apppeals, good behavior, etc) and they can’t build prisons fast enough now for the hardened criminals, child molesters, murderers and rapists, just where do they think the would house something like 85% (conservative estimate?) of the population? As for how I feel about the issue - I don’t condone cheating on a marriage by any means, but a life sentence in prison - come on, puhleeze.
i think a person that cheat’s and don’t be man or women enough to be honest and come out and ask their spouse for a divorce and if they hide the fact and never tell the spouse and keep being with thier lover then they should pass a law for them to be locked up and throw the key away so they’ll never have sex again
Marriage is a civil contract. Penalties for violations of this contract should be civil. My reasons are purely economic.
Can you imagine all the costs involved with investigating, prosecuting, trying, and jailing all of the cheaters in the world?
How many times have you been accused (wrongly) of cheating by a insecure or vindictive ex? How would you like to get investigated for it by the police?
What a joke! "my S.O. is cheating, please almighty government, spend somebody else’s money to punish them!". Damn, this country will not be happy until we have the government monitoring and managing every aspect of out lives.
If one has a drunken fling at the comapny Christmas party, should they end up on some sex offender list for the rest of their lives?
Stuff like this will result in the death of marriage. Marriage will become such a ridiculous exposure to penalties that nobody will bother with it.
Cheating is bad, but the Government getting involved is even worst.
A life sentence is a death sentence for many people, to share a room with bank robbers, murderers, rapist (some of them with HIV), drug dealers, gun runners, gang members, and so on.
In Africa and Asia, women are killed (stoned, shot, burned alive or hanged) for cheating even if it is a lie or a "maybe she was cheating". Men only get a beating and "go home".
To make criminal a social behavior is just far extremist. At most, cheating is just a breach of contract, and should go to civil courts. You cheat, you pay.
What is next: Death penalty for not going to church?
I think life is a little harsh, but a few years seems fine to me.
A life sentence would be crazy, I agee a divorce would be a wiser choice, to just leave if you are intrested in someone else, not in love with the person you a currently with.
I don’t believe that this could possibly be passed. It’s quite harsh of a sentence, besides adultery is not illegal. no way, besides that would be a horrible way to spend our tax dollars. prisons are already overcrowded in this country. ain’t no way that would ever happen in this country. sorry
I don’t agree that a law like that should be passed. Also a law like that could never be passed as it violates constitutional rights. Don’t get me wrong, cheaters are idiots, but you can’t lock someone away for life for either being dumb or simply making a mistake. Beside were in the world would the government get all that money to house in prisons all these "cheaters." Now that’s some stupid news. Are you sure this is a real article? Where’s the source, some extremist religious group? Also how would you prove something like that?
Tochet! it’s about time. That’s not a bad law at all. I say if your going to go through the trouble of getting LEGALLY married stick to the laws. If not then DON’T GET MARRIED! people tend to get away with so much crap these days. Maybe this will reduce the divorce rate. I feel this would be a good law.
Someone who commits adultery will get more than a life sentence when they go to meet their maker!
Life sentance? Thats over the top. Unrealistic. With the money spent to incarcerate thousands of cheating men we could be educatiing couples about what marriage really is and make them think before entering into it. I think living together, sharing bills, toothpaste, and bad habits is a better way to start out. If you can stay committed through all of that, you may have a chance at marriage.
don’t agree with it.
I think this is too personal an issue to allow the government to meddle in. And certainly life sentence is far too harsh.
Makes a person think twice about what they are doing, its not only going to be their spouse they hurt, they will be facing a future that’s not so pleasant… U PLAY U PAY……. I’m 4 IT!!!!
this is a real law, I know because my husband used it to get me to drop a personal protection order I had against him for beating me up. I had already left him when I committed adultery, but I had not yet filed for a divorce. I\’m sure I would not recieve life in prison, but I would still have a felony on my record which I would have to report to every potential employer for the rest of my life. I don\’t believe this law is fair, especially not when a woman who has been beaten is made subject to further punishment. In marital issues such as adultery the behaviour of both spouses should be weighed. Marital issues should be confined to marriage laws, not criminal laws.
