Is paranoia part of bi-polar symptoms? What about extreme jealousy?
I’m trying to get more info on bi-polar disorder. My husband, thanks to a court order, is finally being forced to get treatment. His phsychologist has made some preliminary diagnosis but I am not convinced she’s on the right track. I believe it is either Paranoid Personality Disorder or Bi-polar. I would like to know if paranoia, thinking people are following you, being worried about hidden cameras, not trusting people in general (everyone cheats him), and extreme jealousy without any evidence can be part of untreated bi-polar. I am hearing/reading that it might be, but would like some info from people who are actually living with it or living with someone with it to give me a better and more realistic idea. Thanks

I am really sorry you are having to go through this. Let him know that you are there for him. I am sure this is very hard for him as well.
Yes, they are from the experience that I have had with my family and bi-polar.
Encourage him and notice and compliment his good points.
Bipolar disorder involves periods of elevated mood, or mania, alternating with periods of depression. A person with bipolar disorder typically cycles between these two extremes, often with periods of normal mood in between. The pattern of symptoms differs from person. Some people are more prone to either mania or depression, while others experience equal numbers of manic and depressive episodes. The frequency and duration of the mood episodes also varies widely. While a few individuals experience only one or two periods of mood disruption, most people with bipolar disorder suffer from multiple, recurring manic and depressive episodes.
There are four types of mood episodes that can occur in bipolar disorder: mania, hypomania, depression, or a mixed episode
it is possible that it is a symptom, but he could also have both.
Yes, It can be but that also sounds like paranoid schizophrenia. So many of these disorders have many of the same symptoms and are even treated with the same medications sometimes. It is very confusing. My brother has been trying to get a Dr to give him a diagnosis for years. He has been in and out of the hospital about 10 times for attempted suicide and we can’t get any Dr’s to help him. They give him drugs (that make him worse than he was to begin with) and send him on his ways. You and your husband are very lucky he is being forced to get treatment
My daughter and nephew are Bipolar 2 and both tend to be paranoid, especially when they are manic (or hypomanic in their case.) His paranoia is more severe than what I’ve seen with my D and N though. However, they have Bipolar 2 and your husband may have Bipolar 1 in which the mania is full blown and can include delusional behavior. I would not rule out bipolar just yet. I assume there is a history of depression, also? Bipolar diagnosis requires both.
Most definitely yes! Paranoia and jealousy are extremely common in bipolars.
When your husband is on the correct medication, these symptoms will go away. He will feel so much calmer and better.
He needs a psychiatrist - a doctor who can administer medication. A psychologist only does talk therapy. A psychiatrist is crucial for his mental well-being. Make sure he’s seeing a psychiatrist.
I’m bipolar and I don’t have issues with thinking people are following me, or hidden cameras BUT not trusting people in general and extreme jealousy are major problems of mine. So just wanted to let you know from someone who is bipolar. Hope it helps
